CHARLOTTE, N.C., June 12, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In an effort to assist their airline customers in reducing overhead, Goodrich Corporation has invested in handheld and web-based technology to streamline its heavy maintenance service offerings.
Aviation Technical Services, an Everett, WA-based division of Goodrich that performs aircraft heavy maintenance, has implemented an innovative program that has helped reduce aircraft maintenance downtimes and increased the flow of valuable aircraft information back to their airline customers.
Implemented first with Southwest Airlines, whose maintenance spans at Goodrichdecreased by nearly 25% in 2001, the program is now being rolled out to all ofthe company’s heavy maintenance customers. The program works by combining twoinnovative tools, handheld wireless devices and a powerful web- based network. The division’s quality personnel are equipped with wireless handheld devicesto input non-routine information into a database as they inspect each aircraftthat has arrived at the Goodrich hangar for heavy maintenance. This informationis then generated automatically as a maintenance work order and added to a real-timecustomer tally. All major maintenance tasks are entered into a web-enabled, critical-path scheduling tool that allows Goodrich’s schedulers to easily identify critical path items for each check and ensure on-time delivery of the aircraft back to the airline. This scheduling tool keeps track of the status of each task, determines which tasks have been completed, and calculates the estimated delivery for each aircraft based on remaining critical path items. This information is updated every four hours and is accessible by Goodrich customers via a secure Internet site and is displayed visually on screens throughout the facility.
